The Electrical Engineering unit at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences in the Tampere University invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in the field of satellite-based positioning.

Job description    

The Doctoral Research will participate in the activities related to wireless satellite positioning in an industrially funded research project and will enroll as a PhD student at Tampere University in the Electrical Engineering Unit of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. The research work will focus on enhancing GNSS receiver robustness through AI and machine learning techniques, for example by implementing AI/ML techniques to estimate and mitigate multipath, and other types of GNSS errors (interferences, atmospheric disturbances, etc.). The researcher will participate in all the PhD-related activities (attending lectures and writing publications) required for a PhD thesis and will also participate in writing deliverables (about once/year), in regular project meetings with the steering committee and in various project-related workshops. Publications are very important during the project duration. The researcher will be provided with supervision in a team with deep expertise on indoor and outdoor wireless positioning and wireless communications, as well as signal processing and hardware aspects of wireless systems. 

Requirements    

·To be eligible to apply for the Doctoral Researcher position, you must have completed a Master’s degree in a relevant field of study at the time of the application.

·The applicant must have strong skills in Matlab or Python -based programming and must be willing to expand their Matlab skills.

  • Knowledge about GNSS, wireless navigation and machine learning is desirable
  • Additional skills that are highly appreciated in this position are the willingness to work hard and to learn more about the fascinating research field of satellite positioning, ability to work both independently and in a team and interest in a research career.

We offer

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period till 31.12.2024. The starting date is early 2024 or as mutually agreed. A trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2—4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is approximately 2700 EUR/month. The salary increases based on experience and the progress of doctoral studies.
