The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.
The Land Change Science Unit investigates the interplay of ecological and anthropogenic influences and its impact on landscape development. The Remote Sensing group is looking in the framework of an SNF funded project from January 2024 or by agreement, for the duration of 2 years (extension possible), for a
PostDoc in UAV remote sensing and tree physiology 80-100% (f/m/d)
This PostDoc position is based on a network of experimental species trials in climatically different regions of Central Europe comprising non-native tree species from warmer climates. The objective of this trial network is to identify potentially well-adapted tree species to warmer and dryer future conditions. Specifically, the project aims to develop phenotyping approaches based on multispectral, thermal and LiDAR data acquired using Unoccupied Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to derive tree vitality and growth parameters. The project is meant to support the identification of species that are both fast growing and tolerant to heat droughts, fundamental for adaptive management and assisted migration programs.
You hold a PhD degree in remote sensing and forestry or plant physiology and a strong interest in engaging in and combining all these fields. You bring experience in close-range remote sensing techniques and ideally already hold a UAV pilot certificate. Strong background in statistics and proven experience in organizing and conducting field campaigns for ecological studies are essential assets. A high standard of independent, structured and careful working attitude, as well as a driving license and the ability to drive over fairly long distance are indispensable since study sites are located from few to several hours away. The position is based at the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL headquarters close to Zurich, but the project foresees few weeks in summer to be spent between Germany and Austria.
