The Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy at Ghent University offers a Bachelor's degree in Applied Language Studies (German, English, French, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Spanish, Turkish), three one-year Master's degrees (Translation, Interpreting, Multilingual Communication), one two-year Master of Education, one two-year European Master's In Technology for Translation and Interpreting, a one-year Master's in Advanced Studies in Linguistics and three one-year postgraduate degrees (Conference Interpreting, Dutch and Translation and Computer-Assisted Language Mediation). 
We have a vacancy for an assistant in Russian, whose appointment will include academic teaching, academic research and academic services. The earliest starting date of the position is 1 April 2024.

YOUR TASKS

  • At least 50% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation. The subject matter corresponds to the TRACE research group (https://research.flw.ugent.be/trace)
  • You will assist in the teaching activities at the department, specifically the Russian language courses, or other courses that match your expertise
  • You will assist in the internal and external services of the department
  • If you meet the formal criteria, you must submit a PhD application to the FWO and the BOF during the first term

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a degree of Master in Translation, Interpreting or Multilingual Communication, a master’s degree in East European Languages and Cultures or an equivalent degree, with Russian.
  • The degree requirement needs to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment. For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted
  • You are interested in academic research
  • You have preferably written a final dissertation on a Russian subject
  • Any teaching experience or participation in extra training, conferences, etc. is recommended
  • You have excellent teaching and communication skills
  • You have a C1 level of proficiency in Russian (CEFR).
  • You have an excellent knowledge of Dutch, both spoken and written.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a two-year appointment, which may be renewed twice for two years, on condition that the previous term was given a positive evaluation. Attention: If you have been previously appointed as a junior assistant or doctoral fellow at a university within the Flemish Community, this appointment will be deducted from the maximum term of appointment, which is six years at the most according to the Codex of Higher Education
  • Your appointment will start on 1 April 2024 at the earliest
