YOUR TASKS

The position is supported by the Belgium Euclid Science Exploitation ESA-Prodex research program which brings together the expertise of research groups at the UGent (Gent), ULiege (Liège), ULB (Brussels) and UCLouvain (Louvain-la-Neuve) universities. There will be close collaborations between these groups, with excellent computing and travel support.

The project is funded for a period of three years. The successful candidate starts before Summer/Fall 2024 to work within the Astronomy group of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Gent University, Belgium.

You work within the Local Universe Science Working Group of the Euclid Consortium and will use Euclid data products to constrain the nature and spatial distribution of dark matter in dwarfs. To this goal, you will leverage the fact that CDM (cold dark matter consisting of, e.g., an unknown elementary particle) and PBH-DM (cold dark matter consisting of primordial black holes) yield different predictions for dwarf galaxy properties. You will collaborate with the other partners in this project (mainly at UGent, ULiege, and ULB) and with external partners (Prof. Peletier of Groningen University) to achieve your science goals.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a PhD in physics or astronomy, with experience in observational extragalactic astronomy or cosmology.
  • Postdoctoral experience is considered a plus.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of indefinite duration. Your contract will start no later than Fall 2024.
  • A budget for travel (to the EC meeting and an international conference every year, and for work stays at the other institutes involved in this project), and for a laptop and a writing tablet.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate). Click here for more information about our salary scales.
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.
