On Monday April 8, the moon will pass between the earth and the sun, and astrologers are warning that the resulting eclipse could affect us physically, mentally and spiritually.
In the physical realm, the near total solar eclipse means darkness could cover select parts of North America for minutes when it should be broad daylight. And on the astral plane? Chaos, cataclysms and Chiron (a comet associated with deep emotional wounds) — at least according to some TikTok astrologers pumping the algorithm full of sensationalist predictions about how this solar eclipse will tweak our puppet strings.
One popular refrain on social media: The fact that so many schools are closed for the day means the government probably knows something we don’t about this eclipse’s potential impact on us, and it’s probably best we all stay home. Another: The Titanic sank during an eclipse in the same Zodiac sign as this one.
Mercury is also currently retrograde, spelling double-down disaster for all things related to travel, communication and technology. And we’re in the so-called “portal of fate” between a lunar eclipse that happened on March 25 and the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8, meaning the universe is dropping hints about our destiny.
But seasoned astrologer Georgia Nicols dispelled such doomsaying, pointing out that it’s really just another new moon, which happens every month. “It’s a time for new beginnings, renewal, potential healing, a chance to restore things,” she said.
But here, the new moon effect is exaggerated by its particular astrological alignment with the sun. She likened it to a special holiday dinner, in that it’s a heightened version of something that happens on a regular basis. “It’s still just the family having dinner, but it’s a big deal, and maybe there are a few more people, or there’s tension, or you find out something new.”
Depending on your particular chart, determined by where all the planets were at the time and date you were born, Nicols said this new moon could be a harbinger of change in a specific area of your life. This solar eclipse is located roughly in the middle of Aries, the first sign in the Zodiac and one that’s associated with big youthful energy and sudden change.
“Looking at my own chart, I can see that it’s really hitting me in the area of my relationships,” said Nicols, a Libra. “I realize that this is an opportunity for me to rethink, appreciate and be more reasonable in relationships. It’s a chance for me to make something work better for me, and hence the other person.”
For a Virgo, this eclipse falls in the house associated with other people’s money, such as taxes, insurance or an inheritance. “You might have an opportunity to reduce debt, for example, but you might also really have to pay attention to getting your taxes in order,” Nichols said.
For Taurus, it’s in the 12th house, a “very murky place,” said Nicols. “You could have an opportunity to address self-defeating behaviour patterns. You could start to see things you’ve been doing since you were a child, and realize you don’t have to do that anymore.” (For the remaining signs, see her predictions for all 12 signs below.)
Nicols does not believe that the planets directly affect us. “I think that’s ludicrous,” she said. The sun and the moon, however, do actually affect us. Nicols pointed out that there’s a reason there are more cars at Yonge and Bloor at noon then there are at midnight, and it’s entirely to do with the orb in the sky that provides daylight.
Ditto the moon, which us exercises a gravitational pull over water on earth. The tides move with the waxing and waning, and many feel human beings — who are about 60 per cent water — behave differently when it’s a full moon. “The moon affects us, and if this is a stronger new moon, then all those new moon qualities are there,” Nicols said. “Mostly, they’re opportunities. There’s nothing to be fearful about.”
In fact, it’s a great time to focus on healing and becoming the best you can be. “Use this solar eclipse to grab a new opportunity in any way you want to move forward.”
