The synergy of popular culture among young Canadians is on glorious display this week. The release of “It Ends With Us” in theatres has propelled Colleen Hoover’s 2016 bestseller back to the top of the fiction list after an absence of around a year.
The sales boost is encouraged by rumours of bitter feuding between producer and star Blake Lively and director and co-star Justin Baldoni. The delicious discord has also made itself felt at the box office, where the film grossed $50 million (U.S.) in its first weekend despite middling reviews and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 58 per cent.
Similarly, 2021’s young-adult novel “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,” by Holly Jackson, has moved into the No. 1 spot on the children and young adult list with the appearance of its Netflix adaption. The mystery follows 17-year-old sleuth Pippa who delves into a tragic murder-suicide in a small English town five years before.
In non-fiction news, Nancy Pelosi’s biography, “The Art of Power: My Story as America’s First Woman Speaker of the House,” debuts at No. 3. The book’s title is apt: the former speaker is the most influential woman in the Democratic Party and has been the sharpest thorn in Donald Trump’s side.
