Be prepared to take the road less travelled this weekend as closures and potential delays across Toronto could affect your travel plans.
Although there are no scheduled subway shutdowns on the TTC this weekend, some routes may be busier because of various events happening around the city.
Here’s what you need to know:
Friday
The Canadian National Exhibition returns to the lakefront for 18 days of fun and food, starting Friday. As a result, the 509 Harbourfront streetcar may have more passengers than normal between Union Station and Exhibition Loop. The 511 Bathurst streetcar is also a recommended route for CNE attendees. As well, GO Transit’s Lakeshore West trains stop at the annual fair, at Exhibition station.
Canadian “pop-punk princess” Avril Lavigne will be in town on Friday as part of her Greatest Hits tour. The concert, scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Budweiser Stage off of Lake Shore Boulevard West and New Brunswick Way, may impact roads and public transit in the area.
Friday is the last expected day for a construction project that shut down two northbound, right lanes of the Don Valley Parkway near Gerrard Street East. The closures will go from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next morning.
Saturday
Heavy metal band Slipknot is at Scotiabank Arena, on Bay Street between Front and Harbour streets, as part of their “Here Comes The Pain” tour. Public transit in the area may be busier than usual before and after the concert.
From 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., a portion of Danforth Avenue between will be closed between Byng Avenue and Warden Avenue for Wheels on the Danforth. The daylong event is a combination car show and street festival with live music.
Sunday
Actor and rapper Childish Gambino will be performing at Scotiabank Arena on Sunday, which could cause increased ridership on public transit before and after the concert.
Saturday & Sunday
Taste of Manila, an annual Filipino food festival, will be taking place at the corner of Bathurst Street and Wilson Avenue. Described by organizers as an “epic street party,” drivers may have difficulty travelling through the area as Bathurst Street will be closed between Laurelcrest Avenue and Wilson Avenue all day for the duration of the festival.
The Toronto Chinatown Festival will be happening on Spadina Avenue between St. Andrew and Sullivan streets. The region will still be accessible by the 505 Dundas streetcar or 510 Spadina temporary bus route.
New Kids on the Block is playing two back-to-back concerts at Budweiser Stage on Saturday and Sunday. Transit routes may be busier than normal in the evening.
