A road closure, like this one pictured here at High Park earlier this year, is set to begin Monday at another intersection in Toronto – Bloor Street West and St. George Street, which will be closed for a week.
Starting Monday, the intersection of Bloor Street West and St. George Street will be fully closed from Aug. 19 to Aug. 26 as the city completes “reconstruction” of the crossing.
For the week of the closure, the city says cyclists must dismount when going through the intersection or take an alternative bike route, while drivers should expect delays and increased traffic on nearby major streets. Pedestrians will still be able to access the intersection and nearby businesses, the city adds.
Construction work on the intersection will take place between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. everyday next week, including weekends with “excavation activities and heavy breaking of concrete” occurring at various times throughout the day. The city notes that the latter will only occur between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekends.
“The City is making several design improvements to enhance accessibility and safety for all road users. These improvements will help keep road users moving through a busy intersection — people cycling, pedestrians and motorists,” the city’s media relations office wrote in a press release on the closure.
Even ahead of the full closure on Monday, the city says several lane closures will be in effect on Bloor and St. George for ongoing emergency water main work and road reconstruction. These include the westbound lane on Bloor between Huron Street and Bedford Road; the westbound bike lane on Bloor between Bedford Road and Madison Avenue; and the northbound lane on St. George between Sussex Avenue and St. George Station just north of St. George and Bloor.
The closure and construction is expected to be completed by the end of August, and the city says any updates will be shared on the project’s website.

The photo caption on this article was updated from a previous version to make clear that the photo shows a road closure at High Park, not a closure at the Bloor-St. George intersection.Â
