The wet weather comes as many outdoor festivals and events, including the kick-off of the annual Canadian National Exhibition, are set for this weekend.
It’s time to bring out the umbrella and rain jackets as Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for significant rainfall and the potential for thunderstorms this weekend.
Starting Friday evening and lasting through Sunday, the agency is warning of heavy downpours in Toronto and the GTA, with the heaviest rainfall expected on Saturday.
In its weather statement, Environment Canada said the region can expect local rainfall amounts of 30 to 60 millimetres, with rainfall rates of up to 40 millimetres an hour.
Along with heavy rain, the agency warned earlier on Friday of potential thunderstorms throughout the weekend.
The wet weather comes as many outdoor festivals and events, including the start of the 18-day annual Canadian National Exhibition, are set for this weekend.
It is also one of many special weather statements Environment Canada has issued over the past month, including on July 16 when heavy downpours caused widespread flooding in the GTA.
