On Tuesday, August 31, 2004, police found the body of 26-year-old Rosaura Tolentino Ramos of Toronto in a Finch Ave. W. and Weston Rd. apartment building around 11:30 p.m. At the time, police were searching for Ramos’s husband, Juan Antonio Avalos, but who was later determined to have fled to El Salvador.
Almost 20 years after a woman was found slain in a North York highrise, Toronto police say the suspect is now in custody following an extradition hearing in El Salvador.
On Aug. 31, 2004, police found the body of 26-year-old Rosaura Tolentino Ramos of Toronto in a Finch Ave. W. and Weston Rd. apartment building around 11:30 p.m.
According to reporting from the Star at the time, police were searching for Ramos’s husband, Juan Antonio Avalos, also from Toronto, after the pair were last seen together on the Sunday before police found her body.
On October 1, 2004 police issued a warrant for Avalos’s arrest, but later determined that Avalos had fled to El Salvador, where there was no extradition agreement at the time.
On Friday, police said Avalos, now 63, was in their custody and facing a charge of second-degree murder following an extradition hearing in February 2024 by the El Salvadorian government.Â
Avalos is set to appear in court later today at 10 a.m., police said.
This is a developing story.Â
